How to help

Be informed

Anyone can experience an eating disorder. Being as informed as possible about how to recognise eating disorders will help you identify the warning signs in someone you are concerned about. It is also important to talk to a professional with specialised knowledge about eating disorders who can give advice, information and support.

It is not easy to detect who may have an eating disorder as eating disorders cannot be identified by someone’s size or shape.

People with eating disorders may go to great lengths to disguise their behaviour, or do not recognise that there is anything wrong. This may make the characteristic behaviours of the illness difficult to identify and it is often very difficult for the person with an eating disorder to ask for help.
